Avalon Sexual Assault Centre
A community-based, registered charity, Avalon Sexual Assault Centre is the only sexual assault centre in Halifax Regional Municipality and the only organization to offer services that are trauma-informed and trauma-specific to sexual assault/abuse survivors. As professional counsellors, educators, and health practitioners, we are committed to providing a leadership role in raising awareness, supporting those who have experienced sexualized violence, and influencing social and systemic change.
At the forefront of direct service delivery for 35 years, Avalon offers a continuum of specialized, multi-disciplinary services. We provide free, specialized Therapeutic Counselling to women and trans individuals ages 16+, as well as supportive information, referrals and resources to victims/survivors of all ages and genders, service providers, and to the general public. Our Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Program (SANE) responds to the Emergency Departments of the QEII, Dartmouth General, IWK Hospitals, and the Cobequid Community Health Centre to provide medical follow up and/or forensic evidence collection for all ages/genders. Our Prevention, Intervention and Awareness Program provides service navigation for vulnerable populations and communities, public awareness, community education and professional training.
Avalon aspires to a world in which individuals are empowered and mobilized to share responsibility for creating communities free from sexualized violence and abuse.
